The stunning beauty of Languedoc region
Montpellier
The area surrounding the retreat is breath-taking. Situated above the historial town of Lodève, in the department of l'Herault, Languedoc, in the far South of France. Just 40 minutes drive from the city of Montpellier into the hills, through miles of fascinating vineyards sits this designated art town on the edge of the Cévennes mountains.
The Languedoc region is known for its stunning beauty from the impressive city of Montpellier, along the coastline of amazingly, long sandy beaches to the hills and mountains of the Lodèvois area. Unbeatable and remarkable for walking, riding and soaking in the sites or enjoying the beautiful, majestic Salagou lake with its red gullied landscape.
The abbey of St Guilem de Desert and the Priory of Grandmont show exceptional richness in Romanesque art, the historic former captial city of Pèzenas with its winding narrow streets of many art and crafts shops. The walled cities of Aigues Mortes, Narbonne and Carcassonne are all in the region, well-known for the largest wine growing area in the world, olive groves, stunning scenery and the amazing 300 days of glorious sunshine.
Lodève
Lodeve is an attractive market town with a stunning medieval cathedral dominating the central square with several cafes surrounding the typically French town park. There is a good supply of locally grown food and wine at the Saturday market and many attractive surrounding villages. Lodève is a cultural centre with its world famous art gallery, major international art exhibitions, the annual Poetry and Music festival and the centre of craftsmen designers and interior design.
At the top of the Larzac plateau stands La Couvertoirade, the Knights of Templar walled medieval village, which reflects the military power of the Knights and their daily activity of the Hospitaliers through its exceptional state of conservation. The fascinating, newly completed Buddhist temple of Lerab Ling is also close-by, as is the Cèvennes range, the stunning lake of Salagou, amazing Roman viaduct of Pont du Gard, enormous caves of Grotte des Demoiselles and Labeil, impressive deep gorges, the unusual gardens of The Bambouseraie, and the most beautiful village of Saint Guilhem le Desert, to name just a few breath-taking sites.
Grezac is considered the premier location in Lodève, facing south with multiple vistas, overlooking the beautiful town below and surrounding hills.
